Brief
History

EMDC, OAU started in 1989 as an offshoot of a pilot project aimed at injecting maintenance culture into the university system in Nigeria by the National University Commission (NUC), and in collaboration with the Overseas Development Agency (ODA). The pilot programme started with four Centres namely: Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; and University of Calabar, Calabar.

Mission Statement

To make the Center a haven of intelligent equipment designers, where designers bring their ideas into reality, and a resource Centre for maintenance engineering.

Goals/Objectives of the centre

From its inception the center was being funded from outside the university. However, when the fund stopped coming in, the mandates and objectives of the Centre had been modified, and that was to include its financial self-sustenance. Thus the new objectives are listed:

  • i. Repair and maintenance of teaching and research equipment in the university
  • ii. Training of local technicians on Good Laboratory Practice(GLP) and the proper use of the repaired equipment
  • iii. Lending assistance to the university in ensuring the purchase of equipment that can serve the university well;
  • iv. Working towards ensuring succession plan for technologists and technicians in the University by training young and dynamic technologists who in turn will train others;
  • v. Development of simple and cost-effective teaching and research equipment that can be fabricated in Nigeria using locally available components and facilities
.
The new objectives absolve the Centre of the overseeing responsibility to the other EMC in its catchment area. The objective can be broadly considered as three major objectives namely:
  • i. Repair and maintenance of teaching and Research equipment;
  • ii. Training and succession plan for Technologist and technicians in the university
  • iii. Development and production of new teaching and research equipment
On the first of these major objectives, looking at the past repair activities, it can be said that the Center has achieved significant cost savings for the university over the years, especially with equipment that cannot be easily replaced.
